Our Roots
The Taipei Global Health Education Society is the brainchild of the dean of National Yangming University Medical School, Dr. Wei-Shone Chen.
After participating in a community service trip to Shanxi, China in 2004 with Professor William C. Hsiao from Harvard University, Dr. Chen began conceiving ideas and plans which have formed into all that we are today. Since 2005, we have led many groups of medical students on service trips to China, India, Nepal, and various locations in Taiwan. Through the service trips, we provide students with opportunities to learn from giving and serve with empathy, while the less fortunate receive better care. |
Our Mission
The main focuses of our organization are:
|
Our Vision
After a decade of service, we have branched out of the Himalayas starting from Ladakh and Nepal, further on to Xi'an, Sichuan, and even traveling as far as Malawi. Alongside these overseas service trips we have also launched another important project - the promotion of health education closer to home, in the rural eastern and western counties of Taiwan. It is not only important to help those in need but to help those closer to home.
But the most important component of our vision is that we hope these service trips will help shape and educate the future generation of doctors to be more selfless, understanding, and overall more human. It is our firm belief that "one must first learn to be a person to later become a doctor". |
Ladakh
|
Located on the highest plateau in India, the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir is one of the most beautiful and sparsely populated locales in the world. Characterized by both its remoteness and intense elevation, the Ladakhi plateau has posed some difficulty to providing medical assistance and supplies to the local schoolchildren and monks.
Such limitation of medical support inspired the Taipei Global Health Education Society (Taipei GHES) to spring into action in 2008, beginning our service in Northern India and Ladakh with the Ladakh Service Team.

Nepal
|
Nepal is a mountainous, landlocked nation in South Asia. Well-known for its lofty peaks in the Himalayan mountain range, Nepal is also well-known for its deep religious tradition, insofar as being the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism.
Due to the humid environment, the lack of supportive infrastructure, the inadequacy of health concept, and the imbalance of diet, the health of the local community members and monks are often mistreated or neglected. In 2009, the venerable Kyabje Gosok Rinpoche, founder of the Phuntsok Choeling Monastic School, visited Taiwan and spoke with Dr. Chen about the local condition which sparked a new service program in Nepal since.

Taixi
Taixi is a seaside village in the rural western county of Yunlin, Taiwan. In the wake of economic development, the working age residents now live a work-away lifestyle, leaving their children in the care of the elderly.
We believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity at becoming successful in life. Therefore, we decided to establish a Taixi Service Team to nourish the lives and education of both the young and the old. |
Hengchun
Hengchun is located on the southern end of the Hengchun peninsula. Since the township is known for the spring-like weather all-year-round, the direct translation of the name "Hangchun" is "always spring" in Mandarin.
Due to the economic hardship of most locals, local development of education and health are often limited. It is also those limitations that local schoolkids seldom have opportunities to explore their passion or participate in extracurricular activities. Therefore, we set up a Hengchun service team with the goal to develop a strong educational and infrastructural foundation for the community. |
